Often in comic books, locations are created. Sure, they're often based on real world locations, but with cities like Gotham, Madripoor, and Metropolis being pretty well known, you probably know what I mean.

But sometimes in comic books, they go ahead and use real world locations, and sometimes its a mix of both. Like sometimes comic creators will use a real state, but create fake cities inside that state. When it comes to Louisiana, there's a good mix of both.

Comic book characters have origins stories in cities like New Orleans, and random swamps across the state.

For this list, we're going to include both options. I spent some times consulting with the comic book geeks in our offices, and this is what we came up with.

Here is our list of the Top 5 Comic Book Characters From Louisiana:

Honorable Mention - Quake, S.H.I.E.L.D: New Orleans

Probably best known for her time on TV's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", but Quake has been making noise in the comics for over a decade. In the comics she has fought alongside S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers.

#5 - Danielle Baptiste, Witchblade: New Orleans

Though Baptiste wasn't the original Witchblade, she ended up taking control of the Witchblade in issue #100. The biggest thing Baptiste is probably known for is being the wielder of Witchblade when the Unholy Union crossover brought her into the pages of Marvel Comics. Where she was drawn into pages featuring Hulk, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, and more.

#4 - Monica Rambeau, Captain Marvel, Photon: New Orleans

Before this year, Monica Rambeau would have likely been an "honorable mention" on one of these lists. But being featured in the major Marvel Cinematic Universe film 'Captain Marvel' gives her a solid boost. Rambeau has carried multiple hero names over the years. She's gone by Captain Marvel, Photon, Spectrum, and Pulsar. At one point in the comics, Rambeau even took over as the leader of The Avengers.

#3 - Suicide Squad: Terrebonne Parish

This one might be a little unfair, but it can't be avoided in my mind. The members of the Suicide Squad are not all FROM Louisiana. However the team comes together, and is based out of, Belle Reve Prison in Terrebonne Parish. The prison debuted in Suicide Squad #1, and has remained a fixture all the way through the blockbuster motion picture. Notable members who were based in Terrebonne Parish include Amanda Waller, Rick Flag Jr., Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, The Joker, Doctor Light, Enchantress, Nightshade, Poison Ivy, and Vixen.

#2 - Gambit, X-Men: New Orleans

One of the most famous X-Men, which is pretty solid considering he didn't join the team until the 1990s, roughly 30 years after they made their comic book debut. But with the help of the X-Men Animated Series, and a movie appearance, Gambit has solidified himself as not only a top shelf comic book character, but in the debate for the best from Louisiana.

#1 - Swamp Thing: Houma

From comics books, to TV shows, and full length movies, Swamp Thing has been a top level comic book character for decades. There have been some incredible stories written in the comic books surrounding Swamp Thing, and with a new TV series coming out this summer based on the character, it looks like that legacy will continue.
