What we have here is a classic good news / bad news situation. First, the bad: Rosario Dawson has parted ways with New Mutants, Josh Boone’s highly-anticipated X-Men spinoff. But before you go blasting that sad trombone, here’s the good: She’ll be replaced by Brazilian actress and Queen of the South star Alice Braga. See? Everything works out.

THR reports that Braga has signed on for the role of Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor and mutant who has the ability to project a protective bio-field — which should come in handy when Dr. Reyes is running around with all those powerful mutant teens. Braga’s role was previously described as a mentor, similar to that of Professor Charles Xavier. (Despite rumors, it’s been reported that James McAvoy will not be appearing in New Mutants.) Braga, who’s also well-known for roles in I Am Legend and City of God, will replace Rosario Dawson, who exited the project for unknown reasons, though something like good ol’ “scheduling conflicts” seems like a safe bet.

Braga joins a cast that also includes Game of Thrones favorite Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Split’s Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, newcomer Blu Hunt as Mirage, and 13 Reasons Why’s Henry Zaga as Sunspot.

The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone is directing New Mutants from a screenplay he co-wrote with partner Knate Lee. The X-Men spinoff, which begins filming next month in Boston, is currently set for an April 13, 2018 release.
