I've been trying really hard to get back into sports card collecting over the last couple years. This past year, I really tried to pick up the pace. I started collecting cards when I was really little, by high school was normally buying dealer tables at sports cards shows to sell and trade cards. I was able to make a little bit of money, have a lot of fun, and learn a lot of lessons.

I drifted out of collecting when my kids were young. At least out of collecting sports cards. I still had my comic books, but I really trimmed down what I was collecting. Now that my kids are older, and I don't have to worry about them getting into a much stuff around the house, I'm safe to start piling up card collections again.

But back in the day when I started collecting, packs of cards were only $3-$10 dollars each, and boxes for $100-$200. Today's sports card world is full of single packs of cards that sell for thousands of dollars. It's gotten worse during the COVID-19 pandemic as well. Finding unopened boxes of sports cards in stores has become so difficult, many stores have stopped trying to even keep stock up.

The price of modern cards are helping to push this problem. There are currently players who have rookie cards that sell for over $200,000 regularly. Not just in one sport either. Modern day baseball, football, and especially basketball players have rookies that sell for six-figures on a weekly basis on eBay. Players like LeBron James, Zion Williamson, Patrick Mahomes, and Mike Trout top these lists. But it's no longer limited to those major sports.

This new card collecting frenzy has now extended into sports that some will be shocked to learn even have trading cards manufactured.

This past week, a soccer card sold for over $85,000 on eBay...

It was a 2003 Panini Cristiano Ronaldo rookie card. The card is graded as a 9.5 by Beckett. This is pretty crazy in my little brain. That's the kind of price you used to attach to some of the biggest baseball cards of all time, and now a soccer card from this millennium is selling for that much.
