Where Are the Cheaters From the 2017 Astros Now?
The 2024 Major League Baseball season is coming to a close, and the Houston Astros have once again won the American League West. But no matter how much the team achieves, they continue to operate under a cloud mixed with suspicion and annoyance. Many MLB fans outside of the Houston metro area still hold negative feelings towards the franchise over their 2017 cheating scandal. A cheating scheme that brought the team a World Series Championship that they weren't required to vacate.
It also still doesn't sit well for many fans that no players from the cheating scandal faced any form of punishments. On top of that, the punishments that were given out by Major League Baseball were soft slaps on the wrist. Anyone who was found to be guilty of cheating by the MLB Commissioner, and punished, has already outlasted their punishments and are back to participating in baseball. The team was fined a small amount (in context of being a major American sports franchise) and they lost some draft picks.
Because the penalty for cheating was so light against the organization, many other players, managers, and fans continue to have issues with the players and franchise. Especially since some of the guilty parties, who faced no penalty, remain with the Astros.
Both Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman remain with the Astros at the end of the 2024 regular season. Pitchers Justin Verlander and Lance McCullers Jr also remain on the roster today, and were part of the 2017 team, but its harder to tie pitchers to the cheating scandal. Although the pitchers obviously benefitted from the cheating, they weren't active participants, like the hitters were.
Besides the players off the cheating team that are still in Houston, where are the other players from that tainted championship team? We took a look at the hitters from that team, since they're more directly tied to the cheating than the pitchers. Here's where every Houston hitter from the 2017 season are at the end of this year.
