I was pouring over the list of High School games for this year and tried to find some of the biggest rivalries on the schedule. I pared the list to about 20 key matchups and them pared that down to these five HUGE games.

    Haynesville vs. Homer

    September 16th at Homer

After starting off the season against archrival Springhill (now North Webster), Haynesville travels to Magnolia, Arkansas and then back home for the big game. This is THE big event in Northwest Louisiana for the third week of the high school football season. Haynesville is only returning a handful of starters which has some saying this could be a rebuilding year, but don’t tell that to the players. The Golden Tornadoes usually make it to the playoffs every year, but this could be a tough season. Homer has a new head coach this year…the new Pelicans leader is John Sampson who has stepped in with a new system. But he says the players have adapted and should be ready to go when it’s game time. Expect this game to be quite physical with some players telling sports reporters this will be a “smash-em in the mouth” game.

    Green Oaks vs BTW

September 30th at Leonard Barnes Stadium

This is known as the “Soul Bowl” around these parts. It’s way more than a football game. The bands pull out all the stops and the fans prepare for the event for a full week. BTW Senior QB Curtez Griffin will be calling the shots on the offense behind a line that lacks some experience. The Lions’ line will have four new starters. Running backs Carl Law and Aaron Lee (both seniors) will see lots of time with the ball and will be called on to block for Griffin. We must not forget that Green Oaks has the upper hand in this rivalry, winning the game the past two years. It was a defensive battle last year and I expect much of the same this year.

    Parkway vs Haughton

    October 28th at Haughton

Rodney Guin’s Haughton Bucs are coming off one of their most successful season in many years……as undefeated District Champs. But Haughton moves up to 5a this year and faces a tough schedule. One gaping hole is at QB. Dak Prescott is now playing in the SEC and the job falls to Junior, James Almond. He did get plenty of snaps last season since Haughton had little trouble trouncing most opponents. Wide Receiver Damon Gladney is expected to be a key performer for the Bucs. For Parkway, QB Colby Copeland is back for his Senior season. Expect to see him on the highlight reels plenty this year. The Panthers will also have one of the strongest defenses in the region. The Panthers also take the step up from 4A to 5A and have another new head coach in David Feaster. This is a game that will be standing room only, so get out to the stadium early.

    Byrd vs Shreve

    October 27th at Lee Hedges

This will be a Thursday night game this year, but that won’t put a damper on the crowds. Lee Hedges will be standing room only for this huge Shreveport rivalry. Shreve has a new QB this year in Senior Trey Rogers who backed up Zach Savioe last year. Byrd brings back Senior Quarterback Richard Carthon who is expected to lead the team into the 5A playoffs. He’s always a threat to run with the ball. He’s projected to be a college running back. This is a big football game, but it is so much more than that. Both schools use the event to raise money for local charities. Last year, the students from both schools came together to raise more than $25,000 for the Gingerbread House. You can bet something special like that will happen at this years game!!

    Calvary vs Evangel

    October 21st at Calvary

This has to be THE biggest high school football game of the year in our area. It is always a sell-out and draws college coaches from around the region. The Eagles are the defending 2A State Champs and the Calvary game will be a big hurdle on the road to New Orleans. Calvary does have a long list of returning lettermen. They made it to the quarefinals last year. But we can’t forget that the Eagles are the two-time defending state champs. This years Evangel team will have several new players, most notably, Junior Dakota Duron at QB. He’s been playing receiver for the past couple of years. His brother David Dee Duron led the team to two straight state titles. Calvary does have former Evangel Head Coach John Bachman at the helm and he will have the Cavs prepared for this big game. Last year, Evangel won the contest, 34-7.
