The New Orleans Pelicans approach the NBA offseason with roster challenges that require immediate structural changes if the franchise intends to be contenders for ANYTHING in the Western Conference. Franchise management must evaluate the frontcourt rotation, especially the presence of Zion Williamson. They are paying him over $42 million next season, which is starting to feel like an overpayment.

The front office is currently facing a familiar set of developmental issues regarding perimeter defense and secondary playmaking...weaknesses that have historically hindered their overall playoff hopes. But its not like the team isn't spending money; they have 4 players on next year's roster that are set to earn over $25 million each. That's the Zion contract we mentioned already, Jordan Poole making $34 million, Dejounte Murray set to make $32 million, and Trey Murphy III making $27 million.

These contracts, and concentration of assets, are the biggest issue for this franchise. All of this money is centralized on very similar players, who haven't really fit together. These are solid players, guys other teams would probably love to have...not superstars, but solid enough that teams would be interested to explore trade options with.

But the Pels front office never seems willing to make that happen.

Assessing Potential Offseason Trade Scenarios For New Orleans

Executing a high-profile trades usually presents financial barriers for teams in the NBA, because the salary cap requires teams to offset money. Meaning teams can't send cheap players to teams in exchange for big contracts...the way your videos games stop your from building super teams through trades.

There are some loose reports detailing a potential trade package for star Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant that have surfaced. The reports are highlighting the heavy draft capital, and core roster players, the franchise would have to surrender to complete the transaction.

It's not a crazy suggestion either: Pels get Morant, and Grizzlies get Dejounte Murray, Jordan Hawkins, and a 2nd Round draft pick. That doesn't sound bad at all, and would put a legit scoring threat on the floor that the Pelicans have been missing since Anthony Davis left.

Moving current organizational assets could theoretically yield an All-Star return, but the front office has been resistant to these type of deals in the past.

The Reality of Pelicans Offseason Expectations

But because the Pelicans are the Pelicans, the most probable outcome for the offseason involves minor free agency signings, rather than the major roster overhaul desired by fans. League analysts suggest the organization is currently preparing for a highly conservative summer...an operational strategy that points toward running back a very similar roster for the upcoming basketball season.

This deliberate lack of aggressive roster movement is anticipated to cause widespread frustration among the dedicated Louisiana sports fanbase. Fans expecting a dramatic shift in team dynamics will likely face complete disappointment as this New Orleans organization prioritizes spending less money than actually pursuing a playoff spot.
