Ask folks around the Shreveport and Bossier City to name their favorite place for fried chicken and the name Southern Classic is always mentioned.  Well, now the restaurant is taking its success - and awesome fried chicken - to the southern part of the state, with an announcement earlier this week that they'll soon be opening two locations in the Lafayette area.

A Little History

According to a report in the Acadiana Advocate, "the physical locations have not yet been secured, but the plan is to have the first location open late next year followed by the second one shortly after that. Both of the franchises will be owned and operated by Jessie and Amanda Fontenot along with their son, Brody."

The family is already in the restaurant business in south Louisiana. Their parent company, Ballgame LLC, already owns and operates three Fat Pat's Bar & Grill locations in the area.

Who Knew They Were Already This Big?

Southern Classic currently has 17 locations and describes itself on the company's website:

"Southern Classic Chicken has been a family institution in North Louisiana for the past 35 years!  Dedicated to serving the absolute best fried chicken and sides at a price point that provides an incredible value has been the goal since day one and will continue on as the company moves forward.  No corners are cut in sourcing the freshest products possible."

Interestingly, the legendary chicken spot wasn't affected by the pandemic like most restaurants. Restaurant Business Online explains:

"Southern Classic Chicken was prepared for the pandemic—even though it didn’t set out to do so. The chain has always had drive-thrus and walk-up windows. Just five of its restaurants have dining rooms. Before the crisis, it thought about operating with the two different prototypes. Now, though, new stores will only have the drive-thrus and walk-up windows."

Southern Classic, which just recently began franchising locations, emphasizes that to get and keep good workers, they've increased increased employee salaries and added incentives for employees to earn even more.
