Former LSU football star Tyrann Mathieu is appealing a ruling from an Orleans Parish judge ordering him to pay thousands in back child support.

Nola.com reports Mathieu, failed to appear March 25 for a New Orleans court hearing on paternity. Gentilly hairdresser Megan Edwards has filed the paternity lawsuit on behalf of her son born in January 2013. She says Mathieu, who plays in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals owes her thousands in back child support.

A three-judge panel is not expected to take up the case until December at the earliest, and no oral arguments have been requested.

Edwards' suit said she "had a monogamous romantic relationship" with Mathieu from December 2006 through September 2012, resulting in the birth of a son four months after the couple split.
