Delusions of Adequacy: Leadership Vacuum Destroying NCAA Football
What has become of college football? This once great American institution is now a steaming pile of hot garbage, and its all because the adults have left the room.
Now, I don't mean that in the sense that the student athletes are making all of the decisions now. What I literally mean is that every single decision making administrator involved in the running of NCAA D1 FBS are big wet diaper babies.
ALL OF THEM.
The CFP Selection Process: A Playoff-Turned-Cash-Grab
First, lets start with their playoff-turned-cash-grab slop. The idea of having a true FBS College Football Playoff is amazing. People have been screaming for it since the days of split National Championships and the BCS. But what the 'leaders' in the NCAA and those in powerful positions with major conferences have done to this idea is an absolute joke.
I'm not talking about things like Notre Dame being left out, or Tulane getting in. No, I'm talking about the process.
Notre Dame should never have been led on the way they were. Miami (FL) should have been ranked ahead of them the whole time. They played a head-to-head game this year, and Miami won. If that didn't result in Miami finishing ahead of Notre Dame, then why would any team ever play a serious game again? If you beat a team, they could just end up ahead of you if someone in that 'committee' room feels like the loser is a bigger brand.
The Hypocrisy Surrounding Group of 5 Playoff Access
Now the "Group of 5" teams getting into the playoffs. Great (not sarcasm).
This isn't a problem, and anyone who thinks it is are as sharp as a marble. These are the rules that the geniuses who make all of the important decisions put in place. To see them whine and cry about the results of their own decisions is very par for the course with these nincompoops.
They created a path for "Group of 5" teams to earn spots, and are now acting surprised when it actually happens. They're playing victim in a scenario they put together and approved. Like asking an angry guy with a knife "what are you going to do, stab me?"
But what do you want from the "Group of 5" teams? You want them to fill out your schedules, create their own strength of schedule during the season so you can claim them as 'quality wins' when you beat them at home, and supplement your television contracts while not being allowed to participate in the College Football Playoffs? Get out of here with that.
Why do People Hate Cinderella Football Teams?
When a Cinderella team makes a deep run in the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament, everyone gets excited. There aren't a ton of people screaming that "VCU shouldn't be in the Final Four, that spot belongs to Kansas" or "How dare George Mason take UConn's Final Four spot". Why aren't fans keeping the same energy in the College Football Playoffs?
Sure, is someone going to complain because they think a "Group of 5" team is going to lose big in the first round? Maybe. But lets look at last year; all of the games were decided by at least 2 scores. The closest was a 27-17 Notre Dame win over Indiana. Clemson got beat by 14 points by Texas, and Tennessee was blown out 42-17 by Ohio State.
The second round wasn't much better. Penn State won by 17, Notre Dame won by 13, and Ohio State won by 20. Who did they beat? Boise State, Georgia, and Penn State, respectfully.
So...Tennessee, Clemson, Penn State, Georgia...these big programs from powerhouse conferences all got their doors blown off in the playoff last year. Does that mean they shouldn't be in anymore? What if Tulane loses in the first round by 3 this year, or James Madison loses by 14...those performances would be better than some of these bluebloods last year.
Lets keep our standards the same, no matter what name is on the front of the jersey.
Alabama and the SEC Bias Problem
Speaking of names on the front of the jersey getting preferential treatment from the fops in that playoff committee room...let's talk about Alabama.
Should there be a lock tight rule that no 3-loss teams can be in the College Football Playoffs? Absolutely not. Hopefully in the future, we have teams playing the toughest schedules of all time, and they have a chance to beat multiple Top 5 teams during the year, and maybe lose to a couple teams that hold #1 rankings during the season, and another top 10 team.
But that's not what Alabama did...not even close.
Bama has one of the worst losses of the season, losing to a Florida State team that ended up 5-7. They lost to Oklahoma at home (sure, they're a good team, this loss alone wouldn't hurt them), and then got absolutely embarrassed by Georgia in the SEC Championship game. (I don't care if they say they're not holding conference title games against teams, they held it against all of the other teams that lost, just not Alabama).
Not only was it criminal to include them in the playoffs to being with, but giving them the 9th seed might be the biggest sin of the committee this year. IF you could find an argument to get Alabama in the field, they should be the 12th seed at best. But that committee doesn't want to see their sweet, precious, delicate little flower have to go on the road to Oregon in the first round.
No no, Alabama has to have a rematch with Oklahoma, because someone in that room made the argument that Alabama could win that game. Its disgraceful to not only let them in, but over teams like BYU, Utah, or even Texas is painful. The Longhorns have the same amount of losses, including an embarrassing one to Florida (matched by Bama's FSU loss), both teams lost to Georgia, but the separation comes in the third loss. Alabama's third loss was to Oklahoma AT HOME, while Texas lost to Ohio State...in Columbus, by one score. How is Alabama better than Texas?
Notre Dame’s Bowl Game Boycott: A Legacy of Quitting
Either way, Alabama made it...while Notre Dame didn't. Which brings me to the next pack of buffoons that should be dragged out of their bedroom and beaten with a belt: teams that quit.
Notre Dame leads this list. These morons certainly exercised a bold demonstration of poor judgment when they pulled themselves from a bowl game because their feelings were hurt. That's right, this 'prestigious' university endorsed throwing a fit when you don't get your way, as they declined their bowl invitations. Sending a message to all of their young fans: "When things get tough, pack up your stuff and run home crying".
I feel really bad for the Senior players on that roster who expected to have one more game in their careers. Most of these players are not going on to play in the NFL, this will be the end of their football career, and they weren't given warning. I feel bad for the parents of these Seniors, who intended to be at their son's last football game in their life, but didn't expect it to be a November game at Stanford...they fully expected to have at least one more.
Notre Dame should have a postseason ban for this behavior. Maybe its just one season, maybe its 5 years, but something should be done. However, as we covered already, the NCAA is led by a group of gormless pillocks who don't have the maturity to hold the teams they oversee to any kind of standards.
What a change from the super aggressive NCAA that used to drop suspensions and bans on programs for the slightest violation. They stripped postseason awards and wins off historic records. Now they can allow a program like Notre Dame to smear feces all over the walls, and they're cheering them on.
The Idiots Behind Bowl Season Opt-Outs
Now Notre Dame isn't alone. There are a bunch of other programs that all found the eject button before their bowl games. These twerps tried to find something to blame their bowl bid declines on. Some had coaching changes, some said they wanted to 'focus on the offseason', which is all rotten, slimy, malarkey.
Guess what Kansas State and Iowa State, LSU is in the middle of a coaching change. Coastal Carolina, UConn, Memphis, and Penn State are all in the middle of coaching changes, and they're all honoring their bowl obligations. That excuse is a nonstarter wrapped in a layer of dried armpit sweat.
These absolute buffoons are ignoring agreements they've made, and contracts that need to be fulfilled. The whiners at the top of these programs have ZERO honor. Conferences and teams make contractual agreements with bowl committees, cities, and TV networks, and the teams have an agreement with their conference. So when they take their ball and go home, they're letting down hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of people.
Again, I feel bad for the Senior players on all of these rosters. They're being robbed of their final football game, and so are their parents.
Why Fines Won't Fix Bowl Opt-Out Quitters
Sure, the Big 12 fined K-State and Iowa State $500k, but both of these programs have over $7 million in NIL money alone. Kansas State's football operating budget is projected to be over $100 million...so you're $500k fine doesn't hurt.
These conferences should do what the NCAA seems incapable of: suspend teams.
The Big 12 should tell both Kansas State and Iowa State that they have 3 year post season bans for this. Or that their entire athletics program gets a conference tournament ban for 5 years. These conferences have the power to correct this behavior, and they're just sleeping on the job.
Every decision maker with power that doesn't do anything to actually punish these teams is just as responsible as the jackass i the program who said they're quitting.
For next year, I want Notre Dame, Kansas State, and Iowa State all to quit as soon as they lose their third game. Looking at their schedules, they're not going to be able to make the College Football Playoffs with more than 2 losses. So, based on their lame response to this season, they should quit at that moment.
If they quit, and forfeit the rest of their games, those games will all go as wins for their opponents, which will help all of those teams get to the 6 win threshold of bowl eligibility. Teams that would actually honor agreements and contracts, unlike this list of pathetic half-measures.
This whole college football landscape is an experiment in artificial stupidity.
