Two Shreveport Area Guys Have Big Weekends At Two PGA Events
Two different Shreveport area golfers had big weekends at two different PGA event this weekend.
First, former Calvary star Sam Burns won his first PGA Tour event at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida. He finished -17 under, winning by three strokes over Keegan Bradley.
After winning three state titles at Calvary, he went on to play golf at LSU. While golfing for the Tigers, Burns won four of his 15 tournaments during his sophomore year while locking down some major awards. In 2017, Burns was named First Team All-SEC, SEC Player of the Year, First Team All-American, and was the NCAA Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year.
Additionally Burns won the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup with Team USA.
One of Burns' tournament wins with LSU waans the 2017 David Toms Intercollegiate tournament. Which brings us to our next Shreveport area guy...David Toms.
At the Insperity Invitational in The Woodlands, Texas, David Toms was working his way to a PGA Champions Tour (Senior Tour) victory late on Sunday. However he was passed by Mike Weir on the leaderboard late, and Weir ended up winning.
Toms finished second, tied with John Daly and Tim Petrovic at the Insperity.
Before his PGA career, Toms was a standout at Airline High School in Bossier City, and a star at LSU...like Burns. While Burns was coming up, Toms acted as a mentor for him according to multiple reports.
Though it didn't come through on this particular Sunday, with Toms and Burns both playing at high levels on their respective tours, we absolutely have a chance to see a double victory for the two local guys soon.
