There's another former LSU baseball star who is knocking on the door of a MLB debut. This Louisiana native have been creating viral plays all year in the minors, and is ranked as one of the Tampa Bay Rays top prospects.

We're talking about former LSU National Champion Tre' Morgan.

From LSU Champion to MLB Contender?

Morgan was part of the 2023 National Championship team at LSU, and was a major contributor to the squad. In fact, he was named to the 2023 College World Series All-Tournament Team. He was awarded a ton of other honors during his LSU career, including Freshman All-SEC, SEC All-Defensive Team (twice), and First-Team Freshman All-American.

Before making his way to Baton Rouge, Morgan played at Brother Martin High in his hometown New Orleans. During his high school baseball career, he was ranked as one of the top 250 recruits in the country by Perfect Game.

After the 2023 National Championship season at LSU, Morgan was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2023 MLB Draft. He was the 88th overall selection by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tre' Morgan's Rapid Ascent Through the Minors

Once Morgan joined the Rays organization, he started to impress. While he only had 14 games during his first minor league season, Morgan hit for a .396 batting average, with one home run, and six RBIs.

His first full season of minor league baseball was shared between three different levels of pro ball. He played A-ball with Charleston, High-A with Bowling Green, and AA baseball for Montgomery. Across the three levels, he hit with a .324 average, with 10 home runs, and 68 RBIs. Putting Morgan on the radar as one of the top prospects in the Rays organization.

Tre' Morgan's Defense Turning Heads in AAA

This year, Morgan got a late start to the season after dealing with an injury from Spring Training. He's now playing AAA baseball for the Durham Bulls (shout out Bull Durham), and is hitting .272 with 11 RBIs in his first 23 games. But his bat hasn't been getting as much attention as his glove.

Morgan's defense at both first base and in the outfield has been turning heads, and putting it on tape that he can play high level defense at multiple positions. If he can provide plus-defense at 3-4 positions on the field, and get on-base, there will be a spot for him on a major league roster soon.

Why Tre' Morgan's MLB Call-Up Could Be Sooner Than Expected

In fact, MLB.com's Adam Berry recently took a look at the top prospects in the Rays' organization, based on what they've been doing recently. Morgan was listed in his report as the #4 prospect in the Rays' system. Looking over the whole report, all of the players listed ahead of Morgan have some issues with their stat lines. Their #3 prospect, Brayden Taylor, is hitting just .157 with 3 home runs. Their #2 prospect, Xavier Isaac, has missed more time this year than Morgan has, and is only hitting .209 in the limited games he's appeared in. The organization's top prospect, Carson Williams, is hitting just .171 this season, and has a 39.5% strikeout rate.

With the slow starts for the top three prospects, and Morgan staying close to his pace from previous seasons at the plate, suggests the path to the majors might be easier for Morgan than the other three. Not to mention the quality of the defensive plays Morgan has been making, which might create a spot on the roster even faster.
