Apparently the rumors were true.  The LSU Tigers football program has lost the top high school quarterback recruit in Gunner Kiel.  Kiel didn't show up in Baton Rouge  for an enrollment meeting Monday or for first day of classes this morning.

Kiel was  the No. 1 ranked high school quarterback in the nation,  who had committed to play for LSU.  According to LSU recruiting expert Michael Scarborough of   Rivals.com

/TigerBait.com, Kiel wanted to come to LSU, but his mother got very emotional Monday and did not want her son to leave.  He planned to enroll in classes at Notre Dame today.

Kiel, who is 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds and one of the top pro style quarterbacks  in the country out of East High in Columbus, Ind., verbally committed to LSU on Dec. 27 over Notre Dame and a host of other schools, including Indiana.  He had committed to Indiana and broke that pledge before saying he was LSU bound.

"If you follow his recruiting story, he has changed his mind a lot," Scarborough said.

Early in 2011,  Kiel had said Alabama and Oklahoma were his finalists.

Columbus, Ind., is 172 miles from South Bend, Ind., where Notre Dame is located.  Baton Rouge is 673 miles from Columbus, Ind.

You can't blame a teenager's parents for wanting him to go to school close to home.

LSU will still  boast some of the top recruits in the nation under Les Miles, who is this year's SEC Coach of the Year with an SEC Championship and perfect regular season record of 13-0.
