I'm not a genius when it comes to the NFL cap. It's always changing and it seems like some teams can make any deal they want work, while other teams struggle to sign anyone. The Kansas City Chiefs were the former last offseason, but now they are trending toward the latter.

Just today, the Chiefs have cut left tackle Eric Fisher, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz and will reportedly not make an attempt to resign starting center, Austin Reiter.

This after the team signed their generational quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a record deal last offseason and losing the Super Bowl because that guy had zero time to operate the offense.

The good news for the Chiefs is that the move frees up nearly 20 million in cap space, but the bad news is that the NFL free agent pool is a terrible way to build an offensive line.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for both Eric and Mitchell," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement. "With Eric, obviously he was the very first player that we drafted when we got to Kansas City, and we were able to watch him grow into a solid tackle for us for many years. With Mitchell, his durability and toughness is remarkable and he certainly left his mark on our team. These decisions are never easy, especially with guys like these, but both of these players will forever be a part of our history."

Both Fisher and Schwartz ended 2020 injured and have passed the dreaded 30-year-old mark in recent seasons. That doesn't help the problem of offensive line depth the Chiefs had last season going to zero offensive line period heading into 2021. The Chiefs will allegedly return two linemen who opted out of 2020 next season but after a season off will Lucas Niang or Laurent Duvernay-Tardif be able to handle the rigors of the NFL.

Will they be able to live up to the standard of the former first overall pick Fisher or Schwartz who started 70 consecutive games for the chiefs in the midst of three all-pro seasons.

The plan for the Chiefs now points toward the team drafting at least two offensive linemen in the 2021 draft and also potentially grabbing some free agents to try and piece together another credible unit while also trying to shore up the linebacker unit and secondary. Can the team lean on Patrick Mahomes while they rebuild, or will the Chiefs take a step back next year while trying to get back to the top of the mountain.

Only time will tell.
