Over the last decade, more and more retailers have taken the opportunity to fully close on the Thanksgiving holiday. Not to be confused with Black Friday, which will remain to be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) retail holidays every year.

A few years back, some of these big box retailers made the decision to start moving the Black Friday sales into the Thanksgiving holiday. Yes, for some younger shoppers they might not remember it, but there was an era where retailers wanted their Black Friday sales to start as early as possible. This meant retailers like Target, Walmart, JCPenny, Sears, Old Navy, and retailers who have since shut down like Toys R Us and KMart, were all open on Thanksgiving itself.

This wasn't the "adjusted hours" on Thanksgiving that some retailers continue to try (where they open at 7pm), these were full operational days.

While there was pushback from employees, their families, and some shoppers, there were enough bargain hunters out there who were willing to ditch their families on turkey day to keep retailers motivated. However, over the last decade, the trend has fallen off heavily.

You can blame the continued rise of online shopping, or the lack of over-the-top deals big box retailers offer during this holiday shopping bonanza, but the hype has cooled. Especially after the pandemic, many of retailers have put this experiment on hiatus.

There's not at least 40 major brands of big box retailers who have given up on the Thanksgiving daylong sales. This includes stores in the Shreveport and Bossier City area as well. Check out this list of retailers say "no" to full day Thanksgiving shopping in 2024:
