Seahawks Jeremy Lane Latest NSU Demon to Superbowl

Seattle Seahawks cornerback and special teams standout Jeremy Lane has become the 11th Northwestern State product to reach the Super Bowl and hopes to become the sixth Demon to capture a Super Bowl championship.

Lane, a 6-foot, 190-pound second-year pro who was chosen in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, has made 25 tackles while getting three regular-season starts at cornerback in addition to his special teams role and playing time in pass coverage packages all season.

The Tyler, Texas, product from Tyler John Tyler High School earned four letters as a safety and cornerback for the Demons from 2008-11. He played in 43 games and made 137 tackles (57 solo), recording 24 pass breakups, intercepting four passes and recovering three fumbles. He had a career-best nine tackles, including a sack, at LSU as a senior.

Lane was the Defensive Player of the Game after making eight tackles and a pass breakup in the Casino Del Sol College Football All-Star Game after his senior season.

The Seahawks were the NFC's top seed and reached the Super Bowl with a 23-17 victory over San Francisco on Sunday night. They play the AFC Champion Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

Fourteen previous Super Bowls have involved at least one former NSU player. The 11 who have participated have won a total of eight Super Bowl championship rings.

The last former Demon in the Super Bowl was former center and assistant coach Bill Johnson, the New Orleans Saints' defensive line coach, who helped New Orleans win Super Bowl XLIV.

NSU's Super Bowl tradition began when running back Sidney Thornton helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowls XIII and XIV. Tight end Jackie Smith, in his final season of a Pro Football Hall of Fame career, helped the Dallas Cowboys reach Super Bowl XIII.

Offensive guard Petey Perot started for Philadelphia in Super Bowl XV. Receiver Mark Duper played in two Super Bowls, starting Super Bowl XIX, for Miami.

Linebacker Gary Reasons started for the Super Bowl XXI and XXV champion New York Giants, leading the team in tackles in the second game. Receiver Odessa Turner also played for the Giants in Super Bowl XXI.

Receiver and kick returner Al Edwards started at receiver in Super Bowl XXV for Buffalo and played in the following year's NFL championship game.

Cornerback Randy Hilliard helped the Broncos capture their first title in Super Bowl XXXII.

Running back Tony Taylor was part of the Tampa Bay team that won Super Bowl XXXVII.
