National Writer Named This New Orleans Saints Draft Pick the “Worst Pick” in Their 2025 Draft
It's been a week since the 2025 NFL Draft started in Green Bay, and the dust is still settling. Teams are adding undrafted players to their rosters, and the "experts" are casting their final grades on the draft outcome.
The New Orleans Saints have been busy on the undrafted free agent front, filling in some of the gaps they may have had as the draft played out. They also can't escape the labels thrown around by the media.
What Was Named The "Worst Pick" In The NFL Draft?
Let's not say this has universally been named the Saints' worst pick, just by Newsweek's Matt Galatzan. But it has gained a lot of steam online. Galatzan's take is going viral online because there are both people that agree and disagree, with both camps feeling very passionate about it.
So what's his opinion? The selection of quarterback Tyler Shough was the worst pick. Galatzan says in Newsweek:
"Tyler Shough was a questionable pick for a variety of reasons. He's 26 years old as a rookie with seven years of college experience and multiple injury issues in his past. He had one good season in his college career in his final season with Louisville. There is talent, but it feels like a reach this early in Round 2."
Those who agree with the Shough take immediately point at the QB's age. But they also like to post video from his NFL Combine workout where he had a couple of embarrassing throws.
Why Did The Saints Need Tyler Shough?
Even if Galatzan and some fans think Shough was their worst pick, it was something the Saints needed to consider.
Current starting quarterback Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury that could cost him the 2025 season. But beyond that, Carr's age is working against him...and the Saints. While Shough isn't as young as other rookies, he's still much younger than Carr.
Shough could also be a solution for a short term, and the Saints are looking at future draft class prospects. If they think they're going to want one of next year's quarterbacks in the first round, using a lower pick on an older player could be the long term move. Especially if Carr is hurt.
