The New Orleans Pelicans have hired Alvin Gentry as their next head coach. Each side agreed to a deal last night.

Gentry is currently the associate head coach of the Golden State Warriors. He will continue his post with Golden State through the NBA Finals before going to New Orleans and beginning the process of taking the helm.

New Orleans, who ranked 27th in pace last year, want to improve the offensive pace with superstar Anthony Davis in the fold. Defensively, the Warriors owned the NBA's top ranked defense this season, another plus on Gentry's resume.

At 60 years old, Gentry has a 35 year career in coaching, serving as an NBA head coach for 12 of those seasons (Miami Heat 1995, Detroit Pistons 1998-00, Los Angeles Clippers 2000-03, Phoenix Suns 2009-2013). He was an assistant for one season in New Orleans with the Hornets in 2003-2004.

In Gentry’s best season as a head coach he led the 54 win Suns to the Western Conference finals in 2010, falling in 6 games to the eventual champion LA Lakers. His team used a quick paced offense, finishing 1rst in the league offensively that season.

It is currently unknown who Gentry will hire to his staff.

He becomes the sixth head coach in New Orleans franchise history.
