The Louisiana High School Athletic Association, or LHSAA, has announced that they will be moving the state high school football championship games out of New Orleans for this year.

LHSAA Executive Director Eddie Bonine told the media today that the games, known as the "Prep Football Classic", will now be held at Turpin Stadium on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

The reason for the change is COVID-19 restrictions in the city of New Orleans, which would have impacted the capacity for the games inside the Superdome. The financial risks and responsibilities of hosting in New Orleans with their changing COVID restrictions was also mentioned.

The LHSAA mentioned in their release that the games have been hosted at the Superdome since 1981. With the exception of 2005, when state championship games were played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport due to damage from Hurricane Katrina.

Two Shreveport teams are each just one win away from the state championships as well. Byrd and Calvary can advance to the state finals with wins this weekend. Both of the semifinal games will be in Shreveport as well, with Byrd hosting John Curtis at Lee Hedges Stadium, and Calvary hosting Southern Lab at Jerry Baker Stadium.

Other Northwest Louisiana schools alive in the LHSAA playoffs include Minden, Many, Haynesville, and Logansport. Those teams are all in the quarterfinals of their brackets.
