Quarterback Shuffle Leaves Saints Fans Wondering What’s Next
The New Orleans Saints are treating a former starting quarterback like a yo-yo right now, and its not creating a lot of confidence.
Most Saints fans are aware that this is going to be a rough year. The team has stripped a lot of the roster down to the bones, and will be working to build it back up over the next couple of seasons. New Head Coach Kellen Moore appears to be trying to get his playbook installed, and then got get players to execute it.
Questions About The Saints Depth Chart
They have a group of quarterbacks who have less than 10 starts between all of them. One of those quarterback's is a 25-year-old (will turn 26 this month) rookie named Tyler Shough, who is actually older than the current starter, Spencer Rattler. Last year, Rattler started a handful of games for the Saints, giving him more NFL experience than the older Shough.
But there's another former starting quarterback who has rejoined the Saints, after being cut just days ago.
The Saints Are Playing Yo-Yo With A Quarterback
The Saints have announced they're adding Jake Haener back to the roster, after recently cutting him.
Haener did start a game for the Saints last season, but didn't do much on the field. While he's not a long-term solution for the team, he does seem like a decent backup option for a team. But when your team has two players fighting for the starting role, with Rattler and Shough, you have a built-in backup quarterback right away. So do you really need a third string player?
Why Are The Saints Doing This?
Why the Saints brought Haener back is more of the issue. They decided to cut him, then bring him back to the practice squad, then decide to add him to the active roster again. This whiplash doesn't seem like the actions of a team with a solid plan in place.
