The Independence Bowl has been a staple of the holiday season in Shreveport for nearly half a century, and as we gear up for the 49th edition of the game this December, clouds seem to be forming on the horizon. This year's matchup is scheduled for December 30th, and is set to feature a battle between the Big 12 Conference and Conference USA.

For fans in the Ark-La-Tex, this game isn't just about football...it's about tradition, economic impact, and seeing national brand programs play in our backyard. The Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl has hosted some of the biggest names in football history, and maintaining that level of competition is vital for the game's future success.

However, the path to kickoff this year may hit a major speed bump that could derail the expected matchup.

We rely on these conference tie-ins to bring excitement to Independence Stadium, but recent rumbles from the Big 12 suggest that a primary partner might not be able to deliver the team that many are expecting. If the Big 12 cannot fulfill their obligation with a guaranteed team, it puts the bowl in a difficult position.

The Rumors Swirling Around Kansas State

Reports are flying out of Manhattan, Kansas that the Kansas State Wildcats might be looking to pack it in for the season rather than head to a bowl game. Following the shocking news that Head Coach Chris Klieman is 'retiring' after seven seasons, the program is in a state of flux that has left the players voting on whether they even want to play another game.

It is a chaotic scene, with Texas A&M Offensive Coordinator Collin Klein expected to take the reins. But the uncertainty in the locker room is palpable. If the players decide they are done, it would leave a gaping hole in the Big 12's bowl lineup.

According to college football insider Brett McMurphy, the Wildcats have not officially declared for a bowl game yet and are weighing all their options before making a final decision. The situation is so precarious that contingency plans are already being discussed, with reports suggesting that the Sun Belt could be sending a team to step in if Kansas State ultimately declines their invitation. Which could create some amazing options for the Indy Bowl, but its a clear violation of the agreement with the Big 12.

Why K-State Was The Perfect Fit For Shreveport

Before this news broke, Kansas State looked like the absolute perfect candidate to represent the Big 12 in Shreveport this year. The Wildcats had a respectable season that landed them right in the middle of the conference pack, making them a logical choice for the Independence Bowl's selection order. The Independence Bowl is the 6th slot in the Big 12 bowl pecking order, and Kansas State is actually 10th in the standings. The 6th overall team is actually Arizona State...but there are so many caveats to the Big 12 bowl order, we will have to break it down...

With a team like Texas Tech expected to be in the College Football Playoff, that takes a team out of the options. So it moves Kansas State up to the 9th spot in order, and puts Iowa State in the 6th slot...which would be the Independence Bowl.

But, the Big 12 plans to continue to send former Pac 12 teams to other bowls, instead of the Big 12 agreements. That means Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State would all be taken out of the Independence Bowl available teams. Which would now slide Kansas State to the 6th spot, and they would be the last remaining bowl eligible team in the Big 12. Which would make them the obvious Big 12 representative in Shreveport.

The K-State fanbase travels well, and the regional proximity to Louisiana would have likely resulted in a good turnout at Independence Stadium.

Beyond just the logistics, having a recognizable brand like Kansas State would have been a huge win for the bowl game's national perception. We have seen what happens when the Independence Bowl gets a marquee matchup...the city comes alive and the TV ratings follow suit.

The Big 12 Needs To Make This Right

If Kansas State does indeed decide to sit this one out, the Big 12 Conference owes it to their bowl partners to send a viable replacement rather than letting the spot fall to a backup conference, or even a sub-.500 Group of Five team. The conference currently has former Pac 12 teams like Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah that are eligible for bowls, but are being projected into legacy Pac 12 bowl slots. This arrangement makes zero sense when the Big 12 has its own contractual obligations to fulfill first.

The conference leadership needs to step in and ensure that teams wearing the Big 12 patch are playing in Big 12 bowl games. It would be a slap in the face to the Independence Bowl, not to mention the integrity of the Big 12 and their word, if the conference allowed Arizona or Utah to play in the Las Vegas or Holiday Bowl while leaving Shreveport with an empty slot.

These schools are Big 12 members now...they should be filling the Big 12's primary commitments before helping out a rival conference. Even if they 'have an agreement' to fulfill those Pac 12 games...they also 'have an agreement' to fulfill the Independence Bowl agreement.

The Big 12 may be put into a position to show whether they can be trusted, or if they're as untrustworthy as some already think they are.
