Abilene Zoo’s “Bold Adventure” Takes Flight

Get ready, Big Country, the Abilene Zoo is about to roar louder than ever! As the zoo prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026, it’s launching a one-of-a-kind expansion called “A Bold Adventure.” And true to its name, this project is taking wild innovation to new heights, literally.

Phase One, titled “Wild Encounters and Ferocious Eats,” promises breathtaking habitats and immersive experiences. But the showstopper? A Lockheed C-130E Hercules aircraft, the same kind of plane that once graced the entrance of Dyess Air Force Base, will soon become the dramatic centerpiece of the zoo’s brand-new lion habitat.

When the King of the Jungle Meets the King of the Skies

This partnership between the Abilene Zoo, Dyess Air Force Base, and Abilene Wrecker Service makes the zoo the only Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited zoo in the world to integrate an aircraft of this size into an animal exhibit. The wings and tail have already arrived, and soon, guests will walk through the cargo bay to explore the plane’s rich aviation history, including real C-130 missions that transported elephants and bison across continents.

Visitors will also get up-close views through glass panels beneath the aircraft, where lion keeper talks will inspire guests about conservation and the majesty of these powerful predators.

Honoring Abilene’s Legacy and Dyess’ Heroic Heritage

Zoo Director Jesse Pottebaum says it best: “This project embodies everything Abilene Zoo stands for: education, conservation, and community.”

Interestingly, the Abilene zoo grounds were once an airport, making this C-130 addition a beautiful tribute to Abilene’s aviation roots and the men and women who serve at Dyess Air Force Base. It's the classic combination of the past and the future that reveals the true spirit of West Texas: proud, bold, and inventive.

Groundbreaking is set to start in early 2026 and is predicted to be finished by the summer of 2027. Keep up with the progress at AbileneZoo.org or on their social media pages.  So, West Texas, get ready, as this creative adventure (pardon the pun) is about to take off.
