LSU pole vaulter Armand (Mondo) Duplantis took another step in establishing himself as an Olympic favorite when he set a world indoor record in the pole vault Saturday at a meet in Torun, Poland.

Duplantis, a Lafayette native, set a new mark of 6.17 meters, which translates to 20 feet, 2.9 inches. The Duplantis leap broke the record set in 2014 by Renaud Lavillenie.

The 20-year-old Lafayette native competes internationally for Sweden, his mother's homeland. Duplantis, who was at LSU for the 2018 and 2019 track and field seasons, turned professional this past summer. In addition to prize money accumulated on Europe's tour, he also has major endorsement deals with shoe company Puma and energy drink giant Red Bull.

As a freshman with the Tigers track squad, Duplantis set collegiate records in both the indoor and outdoor vaulting events.
