Former Parkway Football Star Could Debut In Mountain West This Year

The long road back to a starting quarterback spot could be completed this year for a former Bossier City high school football star.

As Justin Rogers was starting his senior season at Parkway High School in 2017, he suffered a devastating leg injury in the first quarter, or the first game of his year. It was the kind of injury where a player has to wonder if he's ever going to be able to play again.

Rogers was a highly recruited and ranked college prospect. He had already committed to TCU, and even with the devastating in jury, TCU was ready to honor their scholarship offer to Rogers...even if he couldn't play again.

It took Rogers a long time to get back on the field, there was a point in his TCU career where his coach considered him "90% back" in Spring Practices. But his career at the school would come to a disappointing end. His final statistics at TCU will go down as 1 completion, on 1 attempt, for 1 yard...he was also sacked once.

But that doesn't appear to be the end of his college career. Rogers announced last year that he would be transferring to continue his college career. Then in early 2020, he officially announced he was moving on to UNLV.

This move excited the UNLV program, and those who follow it. Rogers talent can't be ignored, and his status as a 4-star recruit hasn't been forgotten. There were some questions about his eligibility, but the NCAA ruled he was eligible to play right away. Now that he can play with UNLV, he's been identified as a "wildcard" by reporters who follow the team.

The UNLV program hasn't had a stable force at quarterback in a while, and there are a lot of people around the program who think that Rogers can be just that.

If Rogers were to be the starting quarterback for UNLV, we would have been treated to a tremendous matchup with Louisiana Tech. However, do to the COVID pandemic, that game was scratched when the Mountain West Conference decided to shut their season down.

But even without the Louisiana Tech game, we might still get some UNLV and Rogers football. Because the Mountain West Conference sounds like they may be changing their course on football in the COVID pandemic.

Usually, most football fans in the Ark-La-Tex wouldn't be paying attention to Mountain West football...but if they come back in the pandemic, and if Rogers gets the starting job, you could see a lot of new UNLV fans around here.
