The Dallas Mavericks have officially selected Dusty May as the new Head Coach. He departs the University of Michigan basketball program, after taking the Wolverines to the National Championship.

May arrives in Texas following a college career where he established a system for rebuilding athletic programs. His transition from the collegiate level directly to the NBA represents a significant career milestone. Especially when you consider where May is coming from.

The Louisiana Tech Connection

Just over a decade ago, May was forging his career in North Louisiana.
Before gaining national attention at larger universities, May spent time developing his resume in Ruston...serving as an Assistant Coach for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. He assisted Head Coaches Kerry Rupp and Mike White during his time in Louisiana. May worked on the Bulldogs staff from 2009 to 2015 to manage recruitment and player development.

His impact on the basketball program was evident during his eventual departure from the university. Several former Louisiana Tech players actively petitioned on social media platforms for May to receive a head coaching opportunity.

Inheriting The Dallas Roster

May takes over a Dallas team that struggled throughout the last couple of seasons. The Mavericks finished the 2025-2026 season with a 26-56 overall record, placing them near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The prior season they has a 39-43 record.

The franchise has felt like it was moving aimlessly since they decided to trade world-wide superstar Luka Doncic during the 2024-2025 season. A trade that was widely panned by fans and reporters.

The current roster features veteran talent like guard Kyrie Irving alongside young interior players like Dereck Lively II. The primary objective for May will be building a competitive system around young forward Cooper Flagg...who recently secured the Rookie of the Year award after being drafted first overall by Dallas.
