The New Orleans Saints are already deep in roster remodeling as they work to get their roster down to 53 men this week. But an injury from their final pre-season game will probably impact their roster more than any of this week's cuts will.

In the Saints final pre-season game, rookie tackle Trevor Penning went down with what is likely a season ending injury. He reportedly injured his foot so severely that it will require surgery. The official time-table for his return won't be determined until after surgery, but it doesn't sound good for the rookie's chances to play this year. Which is a big blow to the Saints, who were aiming to have him hold down one of their starting tackle positions.

So now the Saints are down to "depth" players at the tackle position. They really don't have starter-quality talent to replace Penning. So the team will have to find some if they hope to secure some level of protection this year.

With Penning down, and no real solutions on the roster, the team will either have to execute a trade, or dip in to the free agency pool. Good news for the Saints is that there are some very solid options available on the market, including a Super Bowl Champion who was a former #1 overall draft pick.

Eric Fisher was the #1 overall pick the in 2013 NFL Draft. He won the Super Bowl with Kansas City, and is still only 31-years-old. So there's probably still some gas in the tank.

Fisher spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts, but is now a free agent. Some reports say he's taking his time picking a team, and has already turned down offers from about 10 teams. What we don't know right now is if the Saints were one of those teams who have already reached out. If they're not, they really should make that call ASAP.
