Byrd Yellow Jackets Face Parkway Panthers Tonight on KWKH
BATTLE OF THE UNBEATENS
The Byrd Yellow Jackets will travel across the Red River to south Bossier City to face the Parkway Panthers in a District 1-5A battle of unbeaten teams. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 at Preston Crownover Stadium.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TEAMS
The Yellow Jackets return the bulk of its 2010 playoff team with seven starters on offense and seven on defense as well askicker / punter Brandon Menard. Byrd owns a 5-0 record and a 1-0 record in District 1-5A after beating the Haughton Buccaneers,48-7 last Friday.
The Parkway Panthers own a perfect 6-0 record and 1-0 District 1-5A record following last week’s 39-12 win over the SouthwoodCowboys. Parkway lost in the Class 4A Regionals last year.
RECENT RESULTS
The Byrd Yellow Jackets opened District 1-5A play with a 48-7 beatdown of the previously undefeated Haughton Buccaneers.Junior halfback Tony Griffin rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets.
The Parkway Panthers improved their record to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in District 1-5A play with a 39-12 win over the SouthwoodCowboys. Quarterback Kolby Copeland was 11-of-18 passing for169 yards and three second-quarter touchdowns.
THE SERIES
This will the 28th meeting between Byrd and Parkway with the Yellow Jackets leading the series 16-11. Byrd has won six straight over Parkway and nine of the last 10, however, this is the firstmeeting as District 1-5A foes. This series began in 1970 with a 28-12 Byrd win, the first of three straight for the Jackets before Parkway posted its first win, 13-0, in 1977. The two teams have met 18times in a season openers, with Byrd holding a slight 10-8 lead.
THE COACHES
Mike Suggs is in his 14th season as the head coach at C.E. Byrd.Suggs owns a 89-57 (.610) record as the top Jacket. He is theschool’s all-time winningest coach with 89 victories. Suggs was the Class 5A Coach of Year and the District 2-5A Coach of theYear in 2002. Suggs was an All-State end for the Southwood Cowboys in 1980 before taking his talents on to Northeast Louisiana University where he played wide receiver for the Indians. He
served as a graduate assistant coach with the Indians’ 1987 NationalChampionship team. After a two-year stint at Southwood, hecame to Byrd in 1990. In 1998, Suggs replaced Alan Carter tobecome the 13th head coach in Byrd history. Suggs and his wifeSandy have a daughter Cali, a senior cheerleader at Byrd, and ason Andrew, who is an eighth grader at Caddo Middle Magnet.Parkway is coached by David Feaster, who has been a head
coach for 13 seasons at three different Louisiana schools and hasan overall record of 109-49. He was at Many for eight years, 71-28, Minden for three years, 25-11, and Leesville for two years, 13-10.
