Unless lawmakers make some changes to the budget for the 2018-2019 budget, funding for TOPS will be cut by 30%.

For LSU Shreveport students this would cut funding from $5400 a year to about $3800 a year. The student would have to get the rest of the money from another source such as student loans. That figure is higher for students at LSU in Baton Rouge which currently get $7400 a year and that would drop to $5300.

The stipend money students getting for honors awards would also be cut. This comes at a time when students are trying to finalize plans to attend college this fall. Some experts say this debate will likely drive students to out of state schools, or keep many youngsters from enrolling in college.
