Serena Upsetter Sloane Stephens Has Local Ties

The 19 year old tennis pro who upset Serena Williams at the Australian Open has some local ties to the Shreveport area.

Sloane Stephens is currently ranked 25th in the world.  On Wednesday she advanced to her first ever Grand Slam semi-final by upsetting heavy favorite Serena Williams 3-6,7-5,6-4.

Sloane is the teenage daughter of former NFL Rookie of the Year John Stephens.  John Stephens grew up in Springhill,LA and attended college at Northwestern State.  As a rookie for the New England Patriots in 1988, he won the NFL ROY Award after rushing for more than 1,100 yards.  John passed away in 2009 after a car accident in Keithville, LA.

Sloane grew up playing tennis in Florida.
