Saints Join NFL In Urging Louisiana Supreme Court To Toss Lawsuit

The most infamous non-call in NFL history that prevented the Saints from reaching the Super Bowl led to a number of lawsuits from fans, but only one has stuck. Now the team is asking for it to go away.

Just in case anyone forgot, in the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship game, Los Angeles Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman blatantly interfered with New Orleans Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis on a 3rd down late in the game, as well as initiating helmet-to-helmet contact. Both penalties were not called, allowing the Rams to get the ball back, and eventually win in overtime.

A Louisiana judge ruled last month in favor of attorney Antonio "Tony" LeMon to legally proceed with his damage lawsuit against the league over the non-call, allowing him to solicit documents and ask questions of NFL officials and commissioner Roger Goodell in a deposition.

LeMon's lawsuit was able to stick, while other were thrown out, because he kept financial damages of the suit at $75,000 (which he says would go to Steve Gleason's 'No White Flags' charity if awarded), allowing the suit to remain in state civil court, rather than federal court.

The NFL asked the Louisiana Supreme Court to throw out the lawsuit, arguing the suit would open up the NFL and other leagues to time-intensive legal proceedings and could mire the legal system "in disputes that it lacks the time or expertise to resolve."

The New Orleans Saints have now joined the NFL in its request, asking the state Supreme Court to toss it out, noting it would "open the door to countless legal claims'' that would overburden courts, the league, and its teams.

Saints punter Thomas Morstead took to social media to support his team's decision, while also showing love to the fanbase.

Saints reporter Mike Triplett of ESPN NFL Nation quoted a team source as saying, "In no way do we not appreciate the support. However, we also need to be mindful not to open a virtual Pandora's box that allows courts and judges to either affirm or reaffirm contests played on the field."
