Republican presidential hopeful and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is on the campaign trail and visited Shreveport today.

During his news conference today in Shreveport,  he challenged President Obama’s comments on energy.

Gingrich said, "The discovery of the Haynesville Shale and the decrease in production costs will place Shreveport in a position to be an energy player."

Gingrich said, "The president’s comments on energy don’t make sense". He went on to say, "I wanted to confront the president directly on this. He’s been making series speeches about it. He’s referred to my speech again and again to my proposal to get to $2.50 a gallon. What he’s saying is factually false.”

“The production of natural gas has gone up substantially since 2008, the price has dropped dramatically. The production value can drive down the price".

"The question is, can you do the same thing with oil? I think you will see a tremendous shift, which affects the Shreveport area, in the use of natural gas. The United States should have in the next couple of years the least expensive energy economy in the world.”

Obama hopes that in the next few weeks, Congress will consider ending $4 billion in tax subsidies. But that is a move he has failed to persuade lawmakers to make during his term.
