Report: Disney Is ‘Unimpressed’ By ‘New Mutants’ Movie
Within Variety’s lengthy new article about Disney’s disappointment with 20th Century Fox and their slate of movies since the company acquired the venerated Hollywood studio is an item that will be of note to X-Men fans. According to their reporting, Disney is not entirely enthused with the still-unreleased movie based on the X-Men spinoff New Mutants.
Their exact words:
Disney is optimistic that handing Fox superhero properties such as “Fantastic Four” and “X-Men” to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will improve the quality of these movies, but bumps must be smoothed over in that transition. The studio is unimpressed with “New Mutants,” an “X-Men” spinoff with a haunted-house vibe, and believes it has limited box office potential.
The New Mutants, directed by Josh Boone of The Fault in Our Stars fame, has already been delayed numerous times. It was shot in the summer of 2017, and a first trailer followed just a few months later. An April 2018 release date came and went, and so did an August 2019 release date. Now The New Mutants is scheduled to open in theaters on April 3, 2020 — but who knows if it will actually debut at that time.
Unsubstantiated rumors have suggested Disney may decide to skip New Mutants’ theatrical release altogether and put the film on their new Disney+ streaming service — a decision that would make a lot of sense. If you think a movie is going to flop in theaters anyway, why not make it — a glossy, spooky Marvel movie featuring a talented young cast including Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams — an exclusive original on this big online initiative?
