The last time coaching legend Alan Carter was on the sidelines as a coach was as a defensive coordinator for the Byrd Yellow Jackets in 1997 under head coach Mike Suggs.

After serving as Athletic Director for Caddo Parish Schools for the last nine years, Carter will once again put on the coaches' headphones.

Today the Loyola Flyers announced the hiring of local coaching legend Alan Carter.

Carter first started his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Loyola Flyers in 1977, the high school was then called Jesuit High School.

Carter then moved to the head coaching position in 1982. He then moved onto coach the Parkway Panthers, then a team who had never won a playoff game until Carter coached them to a 9-1 record and a district title and playoff victory in 1988.

Carter changed his address to Byrd High School in 1990, and converted a losing program for two season prior and sent Byrd to undefeated regular seasons from 1993-1996. Carter was 51-33 during his career at Byrd.

Carter, 58, tells the Shreveport Times,

"It’s an opportunity to do what I love the most and that is coaching. After being in administration, this is how I want to finish my career. I love what the school is about. The mission is about academics, but Loyola has always had a great athletic program and I look forward to being a part of it again.”

Byrd Yellow Jackets play-by-play announcer Charlie Cavell, who you can hear every Friday night during football season here on 1130 The Tiger, says "you won't find a finer football coach in the area."
