The upcoming season for our Shreveport Mudbugs is still up in the air, but their league has officially announced their plans.

These days, I can't go a week without one of the amazing Mudbugs fans reaching out and asking if I've heard any news in regards to the upcoming season. Sadly, I know as much as all of you, but I'm certainly optimistic that the Mudbugs can find a way to play their season even during our pandemic.

Today, the league the 'Bugs play in, the NAHL, formally announced their plans for pandemic hockey.

In the past, NAHL hockey typically begins with their preseason in August and their regular season kicking off in September. For 2020-2021, the league announced they are committed to playing a full season of hockey, with the regular season starting in October. They also announced they expect the season schedules for each team to be released on Septemeber 1st.

In the statement, NAHL Commissioner and President Mark Frankenfeld says, "We have spent a lot of time discussing return dates and are excited to be moving forward at this time. Our number one priority remains to return to the ice this fall in the safest manner possible for everyone in our hockey community and we believe that October 9th is a good date to achieve that goal.”

While this is good news for hockey fans in Shreveport-Bossier, we have to also take into account what Mudbugs general manager Scot Muscutt said just a few days ago. Speaking about the possibility of hockey taking place in Shreveport this season, Musky said, "Our business model depends on the great fans that we have and if we can't have fans, unfortunately, we can't have hockey in the building."

However, he did add a little optimism by saying, "I think it's really just going to come down to what the governing bodies will allow the state to do and if we get to Phase Three and the requirements for Phase Three don't change - it's game on."
