Tom Arceneaux of the Shreveport Implementation and Redevelopment Authority, talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about the growing blight problem and how citizens can assist with improvements.

Arceneaux tells KEEL listeners about the meeting Thursday (March 21) that will discuss "tools for blight elimination." Arceneaux the solution is "a combination of carrots and sticks. The sticks are enforcement of property standards codes." He says that renovation and zoning are other keys to overall improvement.

Arceneaux adds that a lack of enforcement of codes and standards is a major problem. "I think we need to devote greater resources to enforcement." He also emphasizes that some property owners are to blame, pointing out that many who own dilapidated properties refuse to improve their buildings, but also refuse to sell.
