Tony Gwynn has passed away at the age of 54. Gwynn played 20 seasons for the San Diego Padres and collected 3,141 hits during his Hall of Fame career.

Gwynn had just signed a one year contract on June 11th to coach baseball at San Diego St.  He was on medical leave recovering form cancer treatment.  He began coaching at his alma mater in 2002 after retiring from Major League Baseball.

Tony won eight batting titles with the Padres and led the franchise to their only two World Series appearances.  He was widely considered the best hitter of his generation and carried a .338 batting average over his career.
