Bossier Sheriff’s Office Welcomes Back Sgt. Barrett Lovell
Bossier Sheriff's Sgt. Barrett Lovell, who has been battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia since October 2014, returns to work this morning.
Barrett, now 33, underwent chemotherapy treatments at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. On March 2, he received a much-needed cord blood transplant. The sheriff's office says during that time, he was down physically and emotionally, but a little girl named Helen, who also has cancer, encouraged Barrett.
The 11-year-old girl received about 30 blood transfusions during her two-year battle with cancer, and she had been following Barrett's journey. When she heard he wasn't feeling well and didn't want to get out of bed after his transplant, she sent him a video message to say "Never ever, ever give up. You have to get out of that bed. Do it for the ones who love you and admire you."
That's just what he did. The community has been incredibly supportive, holding numerous fundraisers, saying countless prayers, and attending blood and bone marrow registry drives.
Thanks to friends and his incredible medical staff, Barrett fought cancer and won. He'll return to work today for full duty with no restrictions.
Barrett was welcomed back by a large group of colleagues and friends. Pictures to come!
