On occasion you learn of the passing of one of "the good ones" and it breaks your heart.

That was the overall sentiment a few months ago when people of Northwest Louisiana learned that Trey Burford had lost his battle with the complications of COVID and passed.

However, those who knew Trey best, wanted to turn his passing into something positive for the community he loved most.

His obituary tells the story better than I ever could:

Trey loved his family, friends, work and all things outdoors.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and truly enjoyed his many adventures, both at home and on trips to various hunting and fishing camps.  A forest, lake, river, field or mountain were like glimpses of heaven to him.  Many a story was shared over the smoke of the barbeque grill or fish fryer.

And it was his love of the water and fishing that inspired friends and family to launch a bass tournament that would help to endow the new "Trey Burford Memorial Tournament Scholarship Fund" which will provide money for a high school scholarship for High School Fishing League fishermen.

The first of these tournaments is scheduled for April 2, 2022.  It's the First Annual Trey Burford Memorial Bass Tournament on Toledo Bend to be held out of the San Miguel Boat Launch in Zwolle, Louisiana and the winning team will receive a guaranteed $10,000!

This is a 2-person team tournament with an entry fee of $200 per team, however, individuals can fish alone, providing the individual pays the full $200 entry fee.  There is also a Big Bass pot which requires a $25 entry fee per angler.

There's an incentive to register as early as possible, as the earlier a team registers, the later their check in time will be.

Mail in registrations are being accepted now until March 28, 2022 and must be mailed to:

Trey Burford Memorial Bass Tournament
3605 Red Bluff Road
Gloster, La. 71030

Late registrations will be accepted on Friday, April 1 from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the San Miguel Boat Launch and again on Saturday, April 2 from 4:15 am until 7:00 am, prior to fishing.

To see more and to print out an entry form, just go HERE to their Facebook page.

At the weigh in at San Miguel, beginning at 2:30 pm on April 2, the group will sell t-shirts, hold a silent auction for some great items, and they'll serve fish plates for only $10 with proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
