The roadster race is always a heated one and the new 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata is hoping to stand out from an already packed crowd despite 2013 being the last year for the current generation model before it undergoes a complete overhaul.

The new Miata now has a new front chin spoiler, a larger grille in the front and new front fog lamps. Dolphin Grat Mica is now a new paint option for those of you who want your car to always remind you of Flipper. The Touring trim level has been replaced with the “Club” trim. New 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels have been added as well as a new rear bumper. Mazda has also introduced an “Active Hood” protection system that raises the rear of the hood in case you decide to run over a pedestrian.

On the inside, a new tan color for the leather seat covers is available as well as other seat cover materials like a Glossy Dark Grey.

Though unfortunately the one major thing left unchanged is the car’s engine. Mazda is still offering the same old 2.0 liter four cylinder engine with 170 HP and 140 lb-ft of torque. But they have adjusted the acceleration control and throttle for better acceleration, along with an updated braking system. Prices in the US are roughly between $29,000 and $36,000.

The Mini Cooper S convertible and 370Z Roadster don’t have much to worry about for now. We’ll have to wait for the all new redesigned 2014 model to see if any of Mazda’s competitors start shaking in their boots.
