Who to Call if Your Animal Wasn’t Evacuated During Hurricane Isaac [PHOTOS]

Hurricane Isaac has come and gone but there are still problems in Louisiana.

Sometimes animals do not get evacuated. People might have been out of town or maybe the authorities wouldn’t evacuate animals. Whatever the case may be, these animals are surely in need of care or evacuation.

Parish animal shelters say they are ready to assess the situation if your pet was left behind and needs attention.

The best way to contact the parish animal shelter is to call them at one of the numbers below. If they do not answer or if you can only leave a message, which you should do, then you should also call the parish Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) which is located at the parish Emergency Operations Center.

The key is to:

  • Be persistent
  • Talk to a person to make sure your message is heard
  • Give that person multiple ways to contact you (phone, e-mail, etc.).

When you call, text, or e-mail, state that you are making a request for animal control to remove your animal or to provide food and water.

You will need to provide:

  • Your name, current address and all numbers where you may be contacted
  • The address where the animals are in need
  • Information on the type of animals and where exactly they were left.

If your animals were evacuated, you will need to make a point to find out where they are and how to contact staff so you can confirm their location and condition every day.

As always, show respect when you call. You are stressed, but the person on the other end of the phone is probably a neighbor who has been working long hours and who also may have had to evacuate.
