Woman Bites Into Squid and Gets a Mouthful of Sperm
If you already think eating calamari — aka squid — is disgusting, we’re guessing the fact that biting into one could launch a whole mess of squid sperm into your mouth probably won’t help any.
A South Korean woman who was recently chowing down on calamari reported feeling a painful “pricking, foreign-body sensation” in her mouth. Doctors later removed a dozen “small, white spindle-shaped, bug-like organisms” from her tongue, cheek, and gums.
So what were they? Squid spermatophores. In other words, big ol’ cups of squid sperm. Science 2.0 says each spermatophore “includes an ejaculatory apparatus, which can expel the sperm mass quite forcefully, and a cement body for attachment.” Tasty!
But before you swear off calamari completely, keep in mind that in the US, squid is served with the internal organs removed. So you don’t have to worry about getting what even the most adventurous eaters would likely deem a rather unpleasant surprise.
Plus, in the US, if you want sperm sprayed in your mouth you’ve got to pay extra. We’ll let you figure out if we’re still talking about squid.
