Tonight, Class 5A Playoffs with Byrd Yellowjackets
If you saw the movie, "Friday Night Lights," you know football is king. It's as much king in Shreveport as it is in Texas or Alabama. And we have the playoffs and the matchup to prove it.
Tonight, its the District 1-5 A champion Byrd Yellowjackets taking on West Jefferson from south Louisiana in round one of the playoffs. Byrd is picked to win, based on shear speed.
Senior quarterback #7 Richard Carthon is 5'9 weighs 185 pounds and started as quarterback in all games last year, leading the team in rushing with 904 yards, scored a team high 18 rushing touchdowns and was a first team all district selection.
He's only improved from there this season, leading an undefeated Yellowjackets team that is ranked No. 2 in some national polls. He's often compared to a young Jordan Jefferson of the LSU Tigers.
Going into tonight's game against West Jefferson, Byrd is ranked No. 3 and remains undefeated.
Published reports say Byrd received help from Air Force with its triple option offense, which is the same type offense Air Force runs.
The coaches watched some Falcons practices at Loyola. Then watched some spring practices. And, it seems to be paying off.
Now, West Jefferson, though ranked No. 30, can run and pass and they have a tough defense. However, Byrd's speed makes them the favorite in tonight's game. You can hear all the action, beginning at 6:30 pm with pregame and kickoff at 7 pm on your home for Byrd High School football, AM 1130, KWKH.
And, tune in tomorrow morning from 6-9 to hear the wrap-up from tonight's game with KWKH Byrd announcer Charlie Cavell on AM 1130, KWKH. Get all the playoff brackets from the following link:
