Shreveport Man Sentenced on Drug and Weapons Charges
A Shreveport man convicted of numerous drug and weapons charges in Caddo District Court last year was sentenced Tuesday, May 31, 2022, to at least 15 years in prison without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence, and a $1,000 fine.
Jeremy Rainey, 31, was convicted December 13, 2021 of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, methamphetamine and cocaine, illegal carrying of weapons while in possession of these controlled dangerous substances and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was found guilty on all five counts.
For the first three drug-related charges and the first weapons charge, Judge Waddell Garrett sentenced him to the maximum terms of 10 years in prison. On the last charge, he was sentenced to 15 years of a possible 20 years and ordered to pay the $1,000 fine. The sentences are to run concurrently with each other and consecutive to any other.
Early April 5, 2021, a Shreveport police patrol officer observed Rainey, apparently unconscious, behind the wheel of a vehicle stopped at a green light at the intersection of Hearne Avenue and Murphy Street. The officer attempted to rouse Rainey, and doing so observed a rifle stock between Rainey's right leg and the center console of the vehicle. When Rainey woke, the officer ordered him to put the vehicle in park and produce ID. When Rainey reached for his ID, the officer saw a second weapon, a handgun, as well as what appeared to be a baggie of marijuana. At that point, the officer ordered Rainey out of the vehicle.
The officer determined Rainey was a convicted felon and thus prohibited from possessing firearms. He was arrested. A search of the vehicle and Rainey yielded $4,301.50, ten baggies of marijuana, four baggies of cocaine, eight baggies of crystal methamphetamine, 31 methamphetamine tablets in three baggies, packaging material and digital scales.
Mr. Rainey's criminal history includes six prior felony convictions, and he was on parole at the time of his arrest.
