Shreveport Has Avoided a Meteor Strike for 2,223 Months and Counting

Is the Barksdale Bubble to blame for our great meteorite luck?

Ah, the things you do on a slow weekday. This week at the office, we got into a conversation about meteorites. Of course, a radio station full of bored DJs is a hotbed for weird conversations, but this one particularly caught my attention.

So I dug in and tried to do a little research. The only thing that has ever happened in Shreveport that is even remotely close to a meteorite strike, came in the form of a "loud boom" overhead back in 2014. I'm sure many of you remember that boom quite well. But alas, it was no meteorite strike.

Other than that loud boom, which no one has ever fully explained, we have been meteorite-less since our town's origination back in 1836.

I say in a world with good news few-and-far-between, we celebrate our city's accomplishment. I mean, going that long without a single meteorite strike is cause for celebration.

I say we put a tally up in downtown Shreveport where someone can change it every day to let the world know that our impressive, lucky streak is still going.

As of this writing, we're on our 2,223rd consecutive month without a confirmed meteor strike. Now, if we get struck by a meteor in the near future, I want everyone to blame my coworkers and not me. This was their conversation, I'm merely entertained by it and brought it to your attention.

See, even in our COVID-19-stricken world, we can still find the silver lining.
