The Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks opened their ABA season Friday with a victory over the New Orleans Cougars. And they did it without their head coach Steve Tucker, who was sidelined with an illness and has since had unexpected heart surgery.

Tucker was voted the ABA’s “Coach of the Decade” and has the most ABA wins of all time. He’s expected to return to the team in December.

The Mavericks will have their home opener Thursday at Hirsch Coliseum as the host of the ABA tip-off classic this weekend.
