Rumor: More ‘Suicide Squad’ Characters Could Get Their Own Spinoffs
Recent news of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn spinoff confirms what we already assumed: she’s the best part of Suicide Squad. But if a new rumor proves to be true, she may not be the only charismatic member of Task Force X, as Warner Bros. might be considering giving a couple of her villainous co-stars spinoffs of their very own. To be honest, a Captain Boomerang solo movie doesn’t seem like something that would ever actually happen, but WB has done wackier things in recent years.
According to We Got This Covered, a source close to the studio claims that WB is considering additional Suicide Squad spinoffs — namely for Jared Leto’s Joker and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang. The report explicitly states that these are just ideas the studio is kicking around, which seems fairly plausible given the creative shuffling post-Batman v Superman. WB is in course-correct mode right now, so any number of ideas are probably being floated in an effort to right the ship. And if Suicide Squad is actually good, then it makes sense that they’d try to build on that franchise potential.
The report also suggests that these wouldn’t be straight standalone films, but — like the Harley Quinn spinoff — they would team Suicide Squad members with other DC characters. That definitely sounds more plausible than just handing Jai Courtney his very own spinoff, though you’d think that if anyone besides Robbie were getting an offer for a solo film, it’d be Will Smith.
Still, Robbie’s Harley Quinn movie sounds way more exciting than any other possibility at the moment. The actress reportedly helped shepherd the project, which will serve as an ensemble featuring other female DC characters, with Birds of Prey and Batgirl suggested as possibilities.
Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
