Patrick Mahomes Is the Best Big 12 Alum in the NFL
The NFL Top 100 list is in its 11th season, and the number one player is still Tom Brady. Brady has been up and down throughout the past decade, but in 2022 he overtook last season's number one player, Patrick Mahomes, to get back to the top of the mountain.
Mahomes, in his fourth season to be ranked, is the lowest he's ever been at 8th. Following his 2018 season in which he won the league MVP award, Mahomes was ranked 4th. Following a Super Bowl Championship, he was named 4th again. After losing to Bucs and Tom Brady, Mahomes was named the best player in the NFL by his peers.
After a "down season" that featured more than 4,800 yards, 37 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, Mahomes dropped seven spots, more than anyone else who remained in the top 20 from the previous season. His Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce joined him in the top 10 at 10th place.
Mahomes was the third QB on the list, with Aaron Rodgers (3rd) and Tom Brady (1st) ahead of him. The rest of the top 10 includes: Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp, Jonathan Taylor, T.J. Watt, Davante Adams and Jalen Ramsey.
The NFL Top 100 is voted on by fellow NFL players so it's a great honor, but if you remember Mahomes' reaction to being named 4th in the NFL Top 100 list after his MVP season, I think it's safe to say he'll be using this as motivation.
Digging into the numbers a little bit did reveal that Mahomes was number one amongst a certain subset of NFL players. He's the top-ranked player from a Big 12 School.
Next year will feature another Red Raider in Jordyn Brooks, who enjoyed a fantastic year in 2021 and is poised for a monster season in 2022.
