NOLA Mayor – Mardi Gras 2021 Could be Cancelled
How hard has the New Orleans area been hit by COVID-19? Well, the day to day life has been affected so much that Mayor LaToya Cantrell is not ruling out the cancellation of the city's biggest party, Mardi Gras.
New Orleans without Mardi Gras? Why that's almost unthinkable!
But according to a story on NOLA.com, that's exactly what Mayor Cantrell is thinking. Obviously, any decision about the Carnival season won't be made for several months but it's important to note that city leaders are looking that far ahead as they attempt to recover from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Carnival season in New Orleans will officially begin next year on January 6th. That leaves city leaders about nine months to finalize their plans regarding the holiday in New Orleans.
Cantrell suggested in a story published by the Washington Post that the fate of Mardi Gras will be determined by how the city rebounds over the next several months. It will also depend on how New Orleans' business community rebounds after being shuttered for the better part of two months.
In other words, there is just a whole lot of wait and see that we will simply have to wait and see as to what unfolds. My gut tells me there will be a Mardi Gras, just how well attended it will be is not a question I don't think any of us can answer accurately today.
