Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released on digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD earlier this month with plenty of bonus features, including six deleted scenes. But those scenes only make up about three minutes, when we know that director J.J. Abrams cut almost 30 minutes from his original edit. Will any of this missing footage ever see the light of day? Yes, says J.J. who claims that Lucasfilm has plans to release some of this content online.

Collider caught up with Abrams at CinemaCon where he was promoting another starry franchise, Star Trek Beyond, which he produced. Abrams has this to say about extra Force Awakens footage:

I think there will be some more that will actually be available online. I don’t know when that’s going to happen. But there are some others.

This is not the first we’ve heard about Lucasfilm potentially releasing new Star Wars content online. Whether that’s via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or at Comic-Con or Star Wars Celebration remains to be seen. At least they’ll be making some of this extra footage available online, for free, as opposed to packaging yet another home video release and trying to double dip Star Wars fans.

As for what might be included, there are still characters like Constable Zuvio who never appeared in the finished product, plus a scene where Maz Kanata uses the Force to help escape the castle when Kylo Ren and the First Order attack. The hard part with releasing some of these scenes is that they may have been removed to change the story or to protect future reveals in Star Wars: Episode 8, which could limit what we’re going to see and when.
