According to a study in the June issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, men are more likely to say, "I love you" before women.

In fact, on average, men are likely to say those three magic words six weeks before their female counterparts. Of the couples that participated in the study, two-thirds of men uttered the L-bomb first.

So, maybe men aren't as commitment-phobic as they are made out to be.  Not so fast. While men say "I love you" first,  researchers caution that their motivations for sharing their feelings are different than a woman's motivations.

In commenting on the study, Dr. Laura Berman says it has to do with most men dangling the expression to get what they ultimately want:  sex.

On the other hand,  women are more likely to enjoy hearing "I love you" if sex already  has occurred, possibly as a reassurance.  Dr. Berman claims that the difference is due to gender-based biological cues: "While men are programmed to spread their seed far and wide,  women are programmed to select a fit and suitable mate."

  • As sure as the vine twines around the stump,  you are my darling sugar lump.
  • Where have you been all my life sweetie?
  • Good morning, you sexy,  love goddess, you.
  • I'm falling head over heels in love with you.
  • You're sure lookin' good today baby.
  • Can I buy you a beer?
