Rumors have been circulating for several days, but those rumors seem to have been confirmed Thursday night. At a fund raiser for Caddo DA James Stewart, it was reported that someone introduced Henry Whitehorn as "the next sheriff of Caddo Parish." The initial report was that the announcement was made by Theron Jackson, a local pastor and former city council member, but Mr. Jackson reached out to KEEL News on Friday and reported he did not speak at the event. KEEL News has again reached out to Henry Whitehorn for comment, but Mr. Whitehorn has not returned our calls.
Whitehorn has a long history in law enforcement including Shreveport Police Chief and head of the State Police. Whitehorn also served as US Marshal for the Western District of Louisiana. He was most recently CAO in Mayor Adrian Perkins administration.
Current Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator also has a lengthy history of local law enforcement, having joined the Shreveport Police department in 1973, then serving as Shreveport Police Chief for 81/2 years, appointed by Mayor Hazel Beard. Prator was elected sheriff of Caddo Parish, assuming office in July of 2000.
Qualifying for the sheriff's race opens in July. Currently, two candidates have announced their intent to run. One is current Sheriff Steve Prator, and the other is perrenial candidate Eric Hatfield. Whitehorn is expected to officially announce his candidacy in July.
The Primary election is October 14th with qualifying beginning in July. Early voting is Sept. 30 through Oct. 7 (excluding Sunday, Oct. 1) from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Runoff is Saturday, November 18th, with early voting November 3rd-11th.
